Hevy alternative

A Hevy alternative built on conversation.

Hevy is well-made, cheap, and has a free tier most people never outgrow. There's exactly one reason to look elsewhere, and it's the way you put workouts in.

First, the honest part

Hevy is cheaper, and it isn't close

Hevy's paid tier is a few dollars a month and its free tier logs unlimited workouts forever. Workout Chat is $29 a month with a 14-day trial and no free plan. If you're comparing on cost, stop reading — Hevy is the answer.

What you're paying for here is that every message runs through a language model. That's the whole product rather than a feature on top of a form, and it carries a real per-workout cost. It's worth it only if the data entry is the thing standing between you and a complete log.

The actual difference

Describe the session, don't assemble it

Hevy's logging flow is about as good as the form-based approach gets — routines, quick set entry, sensible defaults. It's still a form. You pick a routine, you work down it, you tap numbers in.

Workout Chat has no routine to pick. You write what happened — including the parts that weren't in any plan, the exercise you swapped because the rack was busy, the extra set you felt like doing — and it comes out structured. Sessions that deviate cost nothing extra to record, which is exactly where form-driven logging gets tedious.

The second difference

The log answers back

Every figure is read through a window and compared against the equal stretch of time before it, and the assistant can read all of it — so a vague question gets a specific answer drawn from your sessions rather than a chart you have to interpret yourself.

  • "Is my bench actually moving, or just my volume?"
  • "What have I neglected this month?"
  • "How's the shoulder trending since I logged it?"
  • "Am I on track for the goal I set in March?"

The third difference

Your training data, reachable from elsewhere

Beyond its own chat, Workout Chat runs a remote MCP server with a full REST API behind the same auth. Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor can log a session or read your history directly, and CSV and JSON export are one click. If you want your training data to be something you can build on, that's the difference.

There's no routine builder here. It records what you did, not what you planned.

Questions

Is Workout Chat cheaper than Hevy?

No. Hevy is one of the cheapest well-built loggers there is, with a free tier that covers a lot of people permanently. Workout Chat is $29 a month after a 14-day trial. On price alone, Hevy wins comfortably.

Why the price difference?

Every message here runs through a language model. Conversational logging has a real per-message cost that a form-based app doesn't, and the pricing reflects that rather than hiding it.

Can I import my Hevy workouts?

Not automatically — there's no bulk importer today. Both the chat and the REST API accept a date on a workout, so historic sessions can be backfilled with a script, but nothing does it for you out of the box.

Does Workout Chat have social features?

No. Hevy's feed and following are a genuine draw for a lot of people and Workout Chat has nothing equivalent. Sharing here is a single workout, by link, for anyone holding it — no profiles, no followers.

Is there a free tier?

No, just the 14-day trial. Hevy's free tier keeps logging unlimited workouts indefinitely, which is a meaningfully different proposition.

So what's the reason to switch?

One: you describe a session instead of building it. Two: you can ask the log questions and get answers from your own history. Three: it runs a remote MCP server, so Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor can read and write your training data as well as the app's own chat.

Two weeks, no routine to build.
